Why Springfield Homes Get Wildlife Problems
We work all over Springfield — North Springfield, Ravensworth Farm, Springfield Estates, Cardinal Forest, Saratoga, Rolling Valley and West Springfield — and two things explain most of what we find.
The first is the corridor. Accotink Creek runs twenty-five miles through Fairfax County and is dammed at Springfield to form Lake Accotink, with several hundred acres of park around it. Roughly a quarter of the surrounding watershed is now rooftop, road and parking lot, which matters more than it sounds: as the built area grew, the green space did not spread out, it narrowed into one continuous wooded line with water in it. Raccoons, opossums, skunks, foxes and black rat snakes use that line like a road, and every backyard that touches it is a turning off that road.
The second is how Springfield was built. In the decade after the Second World War the Crestwood Corporation put up more than four thousand homes along Backlick Road, and neighborhoods followed one after another — North Springfield and Crestwood Park from 1954, Ravensworth Farm’s 790 houses sold from 1959 and finished by 1965, several of them repeats of the same four models. The result is street after street of brick ramblers, Cape Cods and split-levels of nearly identical construction, now around seventy years old.
Seventy years is long enough for the original wood fascia and soffits to have softened at the gutter line, for gable screens to have rusted through, for masonry chimneys to be uncapped or capped badly, and for the trees planted with those houses to be tall enough to put a branch on the roof. Because the houses are so alike, so are the failure points — which is why we often find the same opening on the same corner of three houses on one street.
The Animals We Remove in Springfield
Raccoons — the corridor animal that gets into attics
The creek and lake support a dense raccoon population and they move well into the neighborhoods at night. On a Springfield rambler the way in is normally an uncapped masonry chimney, a soffit torn open at a weak corner, or the joint where a later addition or pop-top meets the original roofline. Spring calls usually mean a female with kits over a bedroom. Raccoons can carry rabies, so this is not one to tackle yourself — we remove the adult and the young by hand and close the opening in metal.
Eastern gray squirrels — the most frequent call
They need about an inch and a half and they find it in seventy-year-old wood: a soft fascia board behind the gutter, the soffit return at a corner, a rusted gable screen. They chew constantly, and chewed wiring in an old attic is a real fire risk. Two litters a year, late winter and late summer, is how one animal becomes several.
Black rat snakes — more common here than people expect, and not the emergency they feel like
Along the Accotink corridor we get regular calls for large black snakes on a foundation ledge, in a crawl space or in a garage. Black rat snakes are harmless to people and are excellent rodent control — we do not kill them. We remove the animal and then deal with the real question, which is what it came in after and where it got through. A snake indoors is almost always a rodent report.
Also common in Springfield: bats in gable louvers and roof-plane seams, handled by exclusion only and never during the May–August pup season · groundhogs burrowing under sheds, patios and concrete stoops · skunks and opossums under porches and low decks · birds nesting in dryer and bath vents · and dead-animal recovery inside walls, which in this housing stock is a job of its own.

How fast can you get to my Springfield home?
