Herndon is really two towns stacked on one another, and the wildlife calls split the same way. The old town grew up around the railroad depot that reached here in 1859, and the Herndon Historic District still holds the late-1800s and early-1900s frame houses that came with it: balloon framing, deep decorative cornices, open porch roofs, unlined chimneys and knee-wall attics. Those houses have gaps that were never designed out, and a squirrel finds them in an afternoon.
Then came the boom. Herndon’s population rose several hundred percent after 1970 as the Dulles corridor filled in, which added subdivisions and long townhouse rows from the 1970s through the 1990s. Townhouses change the job completely: one open soffit or a single failed roof vent can feed an attic space that runs behind several units, so the animal your neighbor heard last month is often the animal you are hearing now.
Geography ties it together. Sugarland Run and Folly Lick, Runnymede Park’s woods and the W&OD trail on the old rail bed give continuous cover straight through the middle of town — which is why raccoons, groundhogs and foxes are as common on the old streets as they are in the newer subdivisions.
The Animals We Remove in Herndon
Raccoons — the most destructive call we take
The photo alongside is one of ours in Herndon: a raccoon trapped and removed off a roof after it opened its way into an attic. A 15–25 pound female will flatten insulation, tear ductwork and establish a latrine that soaks through the ceiling below, and on the old frame houses downtown an uncapped chimney flue does the job for her. Raccoons can carry rabies, so this is not a job to handle yourself — not a DIY job.
Eastern gray squirrels — our steadiest Herndon call
An inch and a half is all they need, and Herndon supplies it two ways: decorative cornices and rotted fascia on the historic-district houses, and soffit returns and roof-vent edges on the townhouse rows. They chew constantly once inside, wiring included, and they breed twice a year — so one animal in February is a family by March.
Bats — the one people wait too long on
Alongside is a Herndon bat abatement job at a failed roof vent — the kind of quarter-inch gap that is invisible from the ground and perfectly adequate for a colony. Bats cannot be trapped or poisoned. Exclusion is the only method that actually works: one-way devices, then sealing every gap over a quarter inch.
Timing matters. Roughly May through August there are flightless pups in the roost, and sealing then traps them inside the structure. In those months we fit devices and complete the seal once the young can fly.
Also common in Herndon: groundhogs under sheds, decks and townhouse patios · skunks under stoops and porch slabs · foxes denning along the Sugarland Run corridor · opossums in garages and in wall voids · birds in dryer and bath vents, which on townhouses are usually high on a rear wall · and black rat snakes near the creek and trail.
